Getting something to space is hard, bringing it back to Earth in one piece is even harder. Aether is a passionate, multidisciplinary team of students that aims to tackle this challenge head-on. We are developing a CubeSat—a nanosatellite no bigger than a shoebox—that can survive a full atmospheric re-entry from space all the way back down to Earth. This would allow for the retrieval of experiments after they are carried out in space, opening the door to many new scientific and technological research opportunities for CubeSat developers. To achieve such a re-entry, we are designing a novel, deployable heat shield that fits within a fraction of the CubeSat.

The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK CEN is one of the largest research institutions in Belgium. Its laboratories are located in Mol and Louvain-la-Neuve and the registered office in Brussels. SCK CEN’s statutory mission prioritises research on issues of societal concern: climate change, circular economy (in nuclear), and using nuclear medical applications in the fight against cancer. Important installations are the: research reactors BR1, BR2 and VENUS, hot cells, underground laboratory HADES, laboratories for antropogammametry and low level radiation measurements, radiochemistry, -biology, -ecology and -microbiology, dosimetry and nuclear calibrations, and more.

Thanks to its expertise in the field of nuclear science and technology, SCK CEN is also an important partner for education and training (E&T) in Belgium as well as at international level. The SCK CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology (http://academy.sckcen.be) is active in the fields of (i) guidance of junior researchers (Bachelor/Master/PhD/post-docs), (ii) organisation of academic courses for students and customised training for professionals, (iii) policy support with regard to E&T matters, and (iv) research on transdisciplinary aspects of E&T in nuclear aspects.
